USS Forrestal was the first aircraft carrier designed aftter World War II. It was commissioned in 1955. It was 59,600 tons in standard displacement, and 1,076 ft (328 m) long, about the size of current nuclear carriers. It has an angled deck. This has two advantages. Airplanes can land on the angled deck at right, and take off from for forward part of the flight deck at the same time. Also, if landing aircraft do not catch the cables that are supposed to stop them, they can continue to fly off the front of the angled deck and try again. 1962 U.S. Navy photo taken by Photographer's Mate Airman Patrick M.
